John earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law in 2001 and passed the Kentucky Bar Exam in the fall of 2001.

Prior to law school, John was a defensive end for the Georgetown College Tigers, helping the team win a share of the Mid-South Conference title his senior year. John also studied abroad at the Universite de Caen Normandie located in Caen, France, where he earned a minor in French language and culture.

Following his first year of law school, John completed basic training with the United States Army and joined the University of Kentucky ROTC program in 1999. In May 2001, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, field artillery officer. In 2004, John transferred to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. As a Judge Advocate, John gained extensive trial experience, trying murder, rape and child sexual abuse cases both as a prosecutor and a defense attorney. He also spent years advising battlefield commanders, senior leaders and general officers. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012, earning a Bronze Star. John eventually retired from the Army in June 2023. Post-retirement, John served as the Director of the Army’s Military Claims Office, overseeing worldwide personal property claims for Soldiers and their families.

John is happily married to his wife, Kasey. They have six children and four grandchildren. John maintains an active lifestyle, hitting the gym each morning at 6am and recently hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail with his son, Will. Before injuries caught up with him, he enjoyed Strongman Training, finishing 3rd in the Heavyweight Division of Chicago’s Strongest Man in 2008. He and wife are avid football fans, cheering on the Cincinnati Bengals and THE Ohio State Buckeyes.
